Writing: Personal Narrative

 

 

Reading:

The student is expected to:

  • describe incidents that advance the story or novel, explaining how each incident gives rise to or foreshadows future events. 6A

  • explain the roles and functions of characters in various plots, including their relationships and conflicts 6B

  • establish purposes for reading selected texts based upon own or others’ desired outcome to enhance comprehension Fig 19A

  • ask literal, interpretive, evaluative and universal questions of text Fig 19B

  • monitor and adjust comprehension (e.g., using background knowledge, creating sensory images, re-reading a portion aloud, generating questions Fig 19C

  • make inferences about text and use textual evidence to support understanding Fig 19D

  • summarize and paraphrase texts in ways that maintain meaning and logical order within a text and across texts Fig 19E

  • make connections (e.g., thematic links, author analysis) between and across multiple texts of various genres and provide textual evidence.

 

Writing/Grammar:

The student is expected to:

  • write a personal narrative that conveys thoughts and feelings about an experiencewrite responses to literary or expository texts and provide evidence from the text and provide evidence from the text to demonstrate understanding. 18C

  • use and understand the function of verbs (irregular verbs and active voice) 20Ai

  • use and understand the function of collective nouns (e.g., class, public) 20Aii

  • use the complete subject and the complete predicate in a sentence 20B

  • use capitalization for abbreviations, initials and acronyms and organizations 21Ai-iii

 

Word Study:

The student is expected to:

  • produce analogies with known antonyms and synonyms 2C

  • use a dictionary, a glossary or a thesaurus (printed or electronic) to determine the meanings, syllabication, pronunciations, alternate word choices an

  • parts of speech words. 2E

 

Listening and Speaking:

The student is expected to:

listen to and interpret a speaker’s messages (both verbal and nonverbal) and ask questions to clarify the speaker’s purpose or perspective 27A

follow, restate, and give oral instructions that include multiple action steps 27B
