Homework

Fifth Grade Homework  and Grading Policies

Homework will be tailored to meet the needs of  learners within the curricular requirements.  While grades are not taken on homework assignments, they are a vital part of the learning process.  Not only does regular homework provide time to practice newly acquired skills, it also is good practice for developing responsibility. If your child falls behind on classwork, he/she will be encouraged to attend study hall during recess on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  At times, a student may also take home late work to complete in order to get caught up.

Planners:

Fifth graders will write in their planners daily so they always have access to assignments and learning goals. This is also the spot where they will record their nightly reading minutes and where the teacher will jot quick notes to you regarding behavior, homework, late assignments, etc.  Please take a moment to look it over and initial it each weekend.

Reading/Language Arts:

In fifth grade, all learners are expected to read for a minimum of 30 minutes a night as they pursue their goal of becoming better readers. Additionally, all fifth graders will participate in the 40 Book Challenge,  though details may vary slightly by class or individual student.  Each week learners will complete a reading log in their planner which needs to be initialed by a parent.

Spelling: Students will need to practice their spelling words at home in order to be ready for their weekly spelling quizzes.  A great resource for this is spellingcity.com.

Math:

Expect that most weeks your child will have math homework nightly, Mondays-Thursdays. We try to avoid homework on Fridays, but it does happen occassionally.  There will be a weekly homework quiz on most Fridays, with all questions taken directly from that week's homework pages.  Learners will be expected to staple their completed homework pages to their quiz each week.  Please note that they may not use their homework to help them answer the questions, but we will go over any questions they have before the quiz. Please ask your child to check his/her planner for the needed pages.    Thank you for your help with this!

.

Science/Social Studies:

From time to time, your child may have homework or studying to complete in science or social studies. Please check their planners and Google Classroom for current information.

Grades:

Please see the district grading policy for detailed information about the Coppell ISD viewpoint on graded work. Learners recieve a number grade in each of the 5 subjects on their report cards.

Late/Incomplete Work:

Learners who fall behind on their assignments and who do not get caught up in a timely manner may be required to stay after school to make up work.  They will also be expected to call their parents about this.  Parents can help prevent this problem by checking their children's planners regularly and talking to their child about their work.
